Understanding the Points Test: A Strategic Approach to Subclass 189

8 min Moderate

The points system rewards preparation. Here's how to maximise your score before you even submit an EOI.

The points test, demystified

Australia's points test is the engine behind the skilled migration programme. To be invited to apply for a subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) visa, you must score at least 65 points — but the pass mark is only the floor. Invitations are issued to the highest-ranked applicants, so the practical threshold is almost always higher.

Points are awarded across age, English language ability, skilled employment experience, educational qualifications, specialist education, and partner skills. Understanding the weightings tells you where to invest your effort.

Where the real points live

English language is one of the highest-yield areas. Moving from competent to proficient, and then to superior, English can add a meaningful margin to your score. For many applicants, focused IELTS or PTE preparation is the single most efficient investment.

Skilled employment outside Australia is capped at a set number of years, but every qualifying year counts. Ensure your roles are properly documented with references that map to your nominated occupation, and that a relevant skills assessment is in place.

The partner advantage

A skilled partner can meaningfully strengthen your application — but only if their occupation is assessed and their English meets the required standard. Conversely, a partner with no skills assessment or weak English can reduce your maximum score.

We help couples decide who should be the primary applicant. In some households, the non-obvious choice yields a significantly higher combined score.

Before you submit an EOI

Every point in your Expression of Interest must be supported by evidence at the application stage. Claiming points you cannot substantiate leads to refusals, not just delays. Build your evidence file first — skills assessment, English results, employment references, and qualifications — so your EOI is a faithful summary of a claim you can prove.

This is the strategic approach in a sentence: maximise the points you can genuinely claim, and prove each one before you press submit.
