The 482 lets an approved Australian employer sponsor you to work. It's a practical, in-demand pathway — and often a stepping stone to permanent residency.
How the 482 works
The subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa allows an Australian employer to sponsor a skilled overseas worker for a position they cannot fill locally. It's one of the most common and reliable work pathways into Australia.
There are three streams — short-term, medium-term, and labour agreement — each with different occupation lists, stay periods, and onward options. The medium-term stream, in particular, is a strong pathway toward permanent residency.
The employer's role
The process starts with the employer becoming an approved sponsor and nominating a position that matches an eligible occupation and your skills. The employer must meet training and market-rate salary requirements.
We advise both employers and applicants, ensuring the nomination and sponsorship are structured to succeed — and to support a future transition to the 186 permanent residency visa.
Your eligibility
You'll need a relevant skills assessment, English proficiency, and work experience in your occupation. The medium-term stream requires at least two years of relevant experience.
Confirming your occupation is on the right list and your evidence is in order before you apply avoids the most common causes of refusal.
From 482 to permanent residency
For medium-term stream holders, the subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme offers a route to permanent residency after a period of sponsored work. Planning for the 186 from day one — occupation choice, experience documentation, and English — makes that transition far smoother.
